The Self Respect Marriage Law was legalised in 1968 by the state of Tamil Nadu by the then Chief Honorable Mr. Anna Durai.
A Self Respect Marriage also known as " "Suyamariyathai Thirumanam" or " Seerthirutha Thirumanam". It is a Hindu Marriage that takes place without a priest and is performed in the presence of friends, relatives or others without the need of an elaborate rituals. It requires the consent of both parties, who must meet the minimum age requirement for Marriage. Groom must be 21 years Old, the Bride must be 18 Years Old.

The Hindu Couple declares each other to be Married in a language they understand.
The Hindu Couple exchanges garlands, rings or a Thali or a Mangal Sutra.
